Market Regime Detection

What is market regime detection?

Market regime detection is the process of identifying distinct market states such as bullish, bearish, or neutral conditions. Hidden Markov Models analyze price patterns to estimate the probability that markets are in each regime state, helping traders adapt their strategies to current market conditions.

How do Hidden Markov Models work for trading?

Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are statistical models that identify hidden states from observable data. In trading, HMMs analyze price movements to infer underlying market regimes that aren't directly observable. The model calculates probabilities for each regime state based on historical patterns.

What is the rhoT signal?

The rhoT signal is QuantHQ's daily regime probability output. It represents the consensus view from our ensemble of Hidden Markov Models about the current market regime state. The signal is delivered as a JSON response through our REST API.

Which market indices does QuantHQ analyze?

QuantHQ analyzes five major US equity indices: SPY (S&P 500), QQQ (Nasdaq-100), DIA (Dow Jones), IWM (Russell 2000), and VTI (Total Stock Market). Each index has its own ensemble of HMMs generating independent regime signals.

How far back does historical data go?

QuantHQ's historical regime signals start from January 15, 2015. All historical signals use walk-forward methodology to avoid lookahead bias, meaning each signal was generated using only information available at that point in time.

What is regime-aware asset allocation?

Regime-aware asset allocation adjusts portfolio positioning based on detected market regimes. For example, traders might reduce equity exposure during bearish regimes or increase it during bullish regimes. QuantHQ's probability signals can inform these allocation decisions.

How fast is the QuantHQ API?

QuantHQ's REST API delivers regime signals in under 500 milliseconds. The API is built on horizontally scalable infrastructure designed for production trading systems that need reliable, low-latency access to market intelligence.

What format does the API return?

The QuantHQ API returns standardized JSON responses containing regime probabilities, dates, and the rhoT signal for the requested index and time period. Authentication uses Bearer tokens passed in the request header.

Can I backtest strategies using QuantHQ signals?

Yes, QuantHQ provides historical regime signals back to January 2015 that can be used for backtesting. All historical data uses walk-forward methodology to ensure realistic backtests without lookahead bias.

What are the limitations of regime detection?

Regime detection provides probabilistic signals, not certainties. Market regimes can change rapidly, and no model can predict all market movements. Regime signals are one input among many for trading decisions and should be combined with proper risk management.
